You can pause the game anytime to use magic and items or decide on an overall strategy for the allies. The player directly controls one character, while AI controls the rest of the party.
Tales of Phantasia is a Japanese-style role-playing game with a unique combat system: battles are action-oriented and take place on separate side-scrolling screens. Before Cless’ mother died in his arms, she told him that the terrible massacre had something to do with the pendant she and her husband had given Cless for his birthday… what could be the connection? The PSP version doesnt have an English translation though, so if you might opt for the PSX just to be able to understand it. When they returned to the village, they discovered it had been burned down, and all its inhabitants had been murdered. The PSX version and the PSP Full Voice Edition are very similar, so playing the PSP one instead of the PSX one is a decent idea. But as soon as it stopped speaking, the two friends heard an alarm go off. Cless was chasing a wild boar when he came across a strange talking tree in the forest pleading for help.
Its probably more practical to learn Japanese at this point than to hold out hope for a translation. Cless decided to go hunting with his best friend Chester on another ordinary day. Tales of Phantasia was my favorite RPG game for the GBA and I loved Narikiri Dungeon as well, but neither the Cross Edition nor Dugeon X got a full translation, official or otherwise. In Tales of Phantasia, the player takes control of a young boy named Cless, who lives in a peaceful village with his parents.
